Stephen F. Austin State University athletes won five events on April 2 during the opening day of the Carl Kight Invitational, held at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches, Texas. The meet began with rain affecting some throwing events but cleared up in time for the evening’s distance races.
The results highlight strong performances from both the women’s and men’s teams. Evaline Chepkoech secured first place in her season debut for the women’s 1500 meters with a time of 4:21.73, while teammate Trude Lamb finished third. In the women’s 5000 meters, Valentine Jemutai took first place with a time of 16:27.90, closely followed by Mercy Kipchumba in second and Sharon Boyani in fourth.
Other notable achievements included Garance Dubray earning a personal best and second place in the women’s steeplechase, Alana Rouquette finishing day one of the heptathlon in third after four top-six finishes, and Tynslee Richards placing fourth in the hammer throw alongside Kiyah Rawl’s eighth-place finish with a personal best toss.
On the men’s side, Bryson Williams won the long jump by nearly a foot at 7.40 meters (24-3.5). Paul Kiprotich led Stephen F. Austin to sweep places one through five—and six runners inside the top eight—in the men’s 5000 meters with his winning time of 14:00.30, coming close to breaking into program history as only its third sub-14-minute finisher.
Additional podium finishes came from Brayden Hill’s third-place pole vault result and Victor Ramos leading teammates Kason Reed and James Williams to take second through fourth places respectively in men’s hammer throw.
The day’s final event saw Japhet Kimei win the men’s 10,000 meters by thirteen seconds.
