The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team lost 6-1 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their Southland Conference opener on Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
In doubles play, the SFA pair of Avery Kinsey and Ana Paula Chavez won their match 6-0 against Adriana Jimenez and Viktoriia Sedona. However, the Islanders took the other two doubles matches, with Yana Mykytyn and Kseniya Ramanouskaya defeating Felicia Back and Sonja Rooth 6-2, and Juliette Julia and Emma Bousquet winning over Alkmini Giannakogiorgou and Antonella Taco by the same score.
For singles competition, Felicia Back secured a win for SFA at the No. 1 spot by beating Leticia Tarocco 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The Islanders won all remaining singles matches: Yana Mykytyn defeated Sonja Rooth (7-5, 6-3), Kseniya Ramanouskaya beat Antonella Taco (6-2, 6-2), Adriana Jimenez overcame Ana Paula Chavez (7-5, 6-2), Josefa Fuenzalida topped Avery Kinsey (6-3, 7-6), and Emma Bousquet bested Alkmini Giannakogiorgou (6-2, 6-0).
Felicia Back earned her second consecutive singles victory. The doubles team of Avery Kinsey and Ana Paula Chavez also achieved their second straight win as a pair.
The Lumberjacks now have an overall record of 0-5 this season. Their next match is scheduled for Monday, March 2 in Edinburg against the Vaqueros.
