The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded the Texas Workforce Commission $2.5 million in disaster relief funding to repair damage caused by Hurricane Laura.
Laura, a Category 4 storm, struck the southwest part of Louisiana and East Texas on Aug. 27, killing 10 people and causing an estimated $10 billion in damage.
The U.S. Labor Dept. said the money will be used for the creation of disaster-relief jobs to clean up debris and provide humanitarian assistance to those stricken by the storm. Work efforts will concentrate in the Texas counties of Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Newton, Orange, Sabine and Tyler. Other counties may be added after damage assessments are performed, the report said.
The repair money is being provided from the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act of 2014, and awards National Dislocated Workers grants. The funding is intended to supply assistance to deal with large events that result in economic and job losses.
