Texas A&M-Corpus Christi stopped Stephen F. Austin’s attempt at a sweep on April 4, securing an 8-3 victory in the third game of their baseball series at Chapman Field.
The result leaves Stephen F. Austin with an overall record of 18-15 and a conference record of 9-6. The Islanders built their lead by scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, widening the gap from the Lumberjacks.
Julian Swift contributed early for SFA by grounding out to bring home Cermodrick Bland for the first run in the opening inning. Later, both players completed a double steal that allowed Bland to score on a throwing error during an attempt to catch him at third base. However, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded with seven runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to establish control.
Jhett Creel added SFA’s final run in the seventh inning with a single that brought Ethan Adkisson home. Starting pitcher Dylan Mulcahy worked five innings and struck out four batters before leaving after the fifth frame. The Lumberjacks used five relief pitchers after Mulcahy, including Brennan Greer who pitched into the seventh without allowing any runs.
The postgame notes highlight that SFA has lost only one Southland Conference series in its last seven dating back to last season, posting a 14-6 record over those contests. Bland recorded multiple hits for his tenth time this season and for his third consecutive game, while Swift extended his team-leading hitting streak to eight games with his fourteenth multi-hit performance of the year.
Looking ahead, Stephen F. Austin will travel to San Marcos on Wednesday, April 8 for a matchup against Texas State before returning home for a three-game series versus UTRGV.
